Pilates with a deviated septum???
I just bought an Aero Pilates Premier Studio (machine)…It comes with the beginner CD of exercises. I found out that breathing is a very important part of doing pilates correctly (through your nose) in order to lose weight.
I have a deviated septum, asthma, and allergies, so I can’t breathe through my nose (very little). I breathe through my mouth.
So, If I’m a mouth breather, will I still be able to achieve the same weight loss benefits??? Please only answer if you know for sure. Please.

I’ve been taking pilates and yoga for 4 years, and one of the principles of pilates is finding what things are comfortable for you.
In your case, your “modification” is breathing through the mouth. It’s absolutely acceptable and much better than not getting enough air through your nose.
Breathe out the “tension/stress/toxins” throughout the exercises, either your nose or mouth, just making sure to breathe at all times and not hold your breath.
I read up on the Aero Pilates Premier Studio machine and it says you CAN do cardio on the machine! So that is the best way to lose weight, getting that calorie-burning rate to rise up! Regular pilates is usually used to “stretch, strengthen, and tone” rather than as a weight loss aid, so I’m glad I looked up your machine.
It’s not magical in the way that if you breathe a certain way you will lose weight.
In short, you will benefit from all that pilates has to offer while breathing through your mouth.
PS- My friend just discovered that she had a deviated septum and the physician recommended she have surgery to correct it. It seems like it’s getting in the way of things, and if it’s a viable option, you may want to consider surgery if your septum is bothering you.
Good luck! and have fun with your new pilates machine:)
