Your Questions About Bikram Yoga

Linda asks…

Bikram Yoga for weight loss?

Hi,
Has anyone out there experienced weight loss while practising Bikram Yoga?
I have been taking Bikram classes for two weeks now. My primary goal is to lose 20 pounds.
I have to renew my membership so I am wondering if it is the right way to go or not.
And yes, I have been eating sensibly. Thanks

Personally I gained 5lbs. But my clothes have a looser fit now. Muscle weight I guess.

Don’t know if that helps…

William asks…

I’m trying Bikram (hot) Yoga for the first time Saturday morning. Is there any advice you can provide me?

I just read someone’s blog that scared me, she said she felt terrible and sick the next day. If that’s common, I don’t think I should do it for the first time when I have things to do the day after.

Or maybe this person had an unusually bad reaction?

I would love to hear any advice or tips. Thanks! :)

Hi,
I’m an avid Bikram Yogi but my first time was really hard. I actually managed to stand the whole time and do all the postures. I should say here that at that point I wasn’t doing a whole lot of working out or exercise in general. So it was quite a shock to the system. I finished the class, thought it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done (yet somehow it felt great!) and came home around 6pm. I sat on the sofa and passed out! I never nap and am generally a night person but was exhausted. That being said I didn’t hydrate before the class and I didn’t eat a big (but healthy) meal about 4-5 hours before class. I didn’t feel sick at all and the next day I was super stiff but somehow managed to go back to class.

The thing to focus on is that every body is different and you won’t know how your body will respond until you actually go and take a class.

My advice is to hydrate plenty before class. Remember that your goal in your first class is to stay in the room. That’s it. Your body is adjusting to the heat and it will take up to 10 classes for your body to really get used to working out in a hot space. So if you need to sit down, sit down. If you feel nauseous, that’s normal. Your body (via sweat) is releasing toxins and sometimes that will make you feel sick. It’s temporary, sit down and have some water and relax.

Also, class is 90 minutes long and they typically give you plenty of time after class to stay in the room and get your heart rate back down to normal. I would suggest you give yourself plenty of time after class ends to shower, get ready, etc. Don’t schedule something right after and be forced to rush.

I’m sure you’ll do great. It’s an amazing work out!!

Bikram Yoga success?

I’ve just started Bikram Yoga and am wondering if anyone has had great weight loss success with it. I’m enjoying it for now, but I don’t have an enormous income and want to make sure that it will be worth the money.

Thanks!

I love it, but I also have never heard about it used for weight loss.
What works great for weight loss is Callanetics, amazon.com $25
in 3 months you will shed a couple of people off of your frame.
And of course don’t drink anything but water, a lot of people don’t realize they drink 1000 or more calories a day and wonder why they just can’t seem to lose weight. Low fat, high fiber, lots of fresh fruits and veggies too.

Questions on Bikram Yoga?

I’m 5’5″ and about 145 pounds, and I was thinking about starting Bikram Yoga. I’m a little skeptical though because of the heat (105 degrees), and the side effects I’ve read and heard about. Is it really too hard, or too painful? What kind of results should I expect? I want to go down to about 120 pounds. Is this possible with Bikram Yoga? How many times a week? Advantages, disadvantages?
Thanks so much!

I tried bikram yoga once a couple years back and I really enjoyed it. A plus about any kind of yoga is that it’s slow and you can really go at your own pace and up your intensity level as you get stronger. Bikram made me feel really clean ad refreshed if that makes any sense. I felt really good after i finished. You sweat a lot… I also sat in a sauna before the class (went from wet heat to dry heat) and that was nice.

That’s about all i can give you- it was a good experience and if i could afford going more often, i definitely would go a few times a week

you should try it and see how it works for you

advice on Bikram(hot) yoga?

I’m interested in doing bikram yoga but I’m a beginner to the whole yoga thing. Do you think I should wait a while until I start doing bikram or would I be okay do just do it now?

yogaandyoutoday.com answers:

I would try doing some beginner classes (3-5) first to see your level of competence with yoga and if you are feeling good then try it. Bikram is very very stenuous.
